about

With the first album still ahead of her, in these self released singles, you hear the development of a sound. Through synthwave, alt-pop, nu disco you feel an artist moving around testing the waters with her staples of horns, strong bass lines and dreamy vocals. Elara seems to settle into place with the latest track ‘Dead of Night’.

The track written in rural Scotland where Elara found work during the lockdowns clearly show her fandom of Lady Gaga, but that is no criticism. Elara dresses her feelings about being a woman in the industry with a disco horn section and a pop punching bassline.

Asked about the lyric, ‘I’m not your dolly, glitter gun barbie’ the artist said ‘I did a little satire video for previous single ‘Break in Two’, a pink PVC dress, pink saxophone, my long hair. Essentially mocking what people think I do - but nobody got it. I had people in touch to book that character. It’s funny really, but also sad that women in the industry are categorised so quickly based on image alone.’

Now back at her studio in Yorkshire Elara states with a laugh and cheeky sparkle ‘I mean the song is about cutting your teeth as a lass in the industry but it could be about disco vampires or whatever you’d like…there were a lot of bats in Scotland’

lyrics

ah-ah-ah-ah
Ah-ah-ah ah ah-ah

In the dead of night
When the daylight has left you behind
You see a flash of eyes
Shadows have the time of their life

The beat hits inside
Careful you don't lose your mind
Our bodies might collide
Leave the mortal world behind
Broke some hearts
Didn't mean too
Showed you my teeth and then I bit straight through
Broke some hearts
Didn't mean too
Showed you my teeth, showed you my teeth teeth

I'm not your dolly, glitter gun barbie
Summer fun p-party girl

Ah-ah-ah-ah
Ah-ah-ah-ah ah-ah
Showed you my teeth
Showed you my teeth teeth
Ah-ah-ah
Ah-ah-ah-ah ah-ah
Showed you my teeth
Showed you my teeth teeth

Ah-ah-ah-ah
Ah-ah-ah-ah ah-ah
Showed you my teeth
Showed you my teeth teeth
Ah-ah-ah
Ah-ah-ah-ah ah-ah
Showed you my teeth
Showed you my teeth teeth

When two hearts strike
In the cold fire of starlight
Behind the smoke and drive
Temptation moderation fight
The beat hits inside
Careful you don't lose your mind
Our bodies might collide
Leave the mortal world behind

I'm not your dolly, glitter gun barbie
Summer fun p-party girl

Ah-ah-ah-ah
Ah-ah-ah-ah ah-ah
Showed you my teeth
Showed you my teeth teeth
Ah-ah-ah-ah
Ah-ah-ah-ah ah-ah
Showed you my teeth
Showed you my teeth teeth
Broke some hearts didn't mean too
Showed you my teeth and then I bit straight through
Broke some hearts didn't mean too
Showed you my teeth
Showed you my teeth teeth
